WHAT IS A CHEMICAL PEEL?

Prior to plastic surgery, many people use alpha or glycolic acids, Vitamin A acid and Vitamin C acid topically, to renew the skin. These are known as a chemical peel and are often the choice for people who are hesitant about surgery. Coupled with a good skincare regime, they help to reduce, reverse and protect the skin from the visible signs of aging. Use of good skincare products can exfoliate the outer dead skin, increase new cell formation, hydrate the skin, and help stimulate collagen formation. Coupled with good anti-oxidant supplements, they will help protect the skin from UV ray exposure, smoking and pollution. A good diet, physical exercise, avoidance of excessive sun exposure, and not smoking are even more beneficial to the skin.

These skin revitalizing treatments are used to improve skin texture, superficial blemishes, age spots, enlarged pores and fine lines.

Glycolic acid is one of the larger group of alpha hydroxy acids, and are from the natural sources of fruit and milk. The acids are used in varying strengths from light, medium to deep prescription strength peeling solution to reduce the visible signs of aging and sun damage.

A single glycolic acid peel performed in your Plastic Surgeon's office may produce the freshening effect you are looking for without surgery. Many people, however elect to undergo a series of light peels to achieve greater improvement.

A prescription-strength glycolic acid cream or lotion may also be recommended for home use. Glycolic acid preparations work beneath the skin's surface to help loosen and eliminate damaged skin cells, unclog pores and impart a healthier glow. Sometimes these acids, creams and lotions may also include bleaching agents that will further improve irregular pigmentation.

The skin may be slightly pink or sensitive immediately following a revitalizing treatment, in most cases you should be able to return to work immediately.

Chemical Peel is especially useful for the fine wrinkles on cheeks, forehead, and around the eyes, and the vertical wrinkles around the mouth.

The chemical solution can be applied to the entire face, or to a specific area - for example, around the mouth - sometimes in conjunction with a facelift.

At the end of the phenol peel, a thick layer of petroleum jelly may be applied to the treated area.

A protective crust may be allowed to form over the new skin. When it's removed, the skin underneath will be a bright pink.

After healing, the skin is lighter in colour, tighter, smoother, and younger looking.
