The Preparation for the Procedure

Prior to your procedure, our Patient Councilor will prepare a package of information for you. This will include pre- and post operative information, the day of your surgery, patient pickup and overnight stay if required. Brochures are also provided with detailed information on the procedure that is to be performed.

Briefly detailed below is a short list of requirements, further information is available from our office and Patient councilor.

PRE OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS

Two weeks prior to surgery:

We request that you avoid taking any aspirin or other acetylsalicylic- like medications, any anti-inflammatories (such as Ibuprofen or Advil), or Vitamin E & C at least 2 weeks prior to your surgery. Tylenol or acetaminophen-like products during that period is permitted. There are some supplements which may jeopardize your safety during surgery and those should be discontinued at least two weeks before surgery, those are:

  • St. Johns Wort this has a mild monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitory effect and may intensify the effect of anesthesia
  • Yohimbe (natural Viagra®) and licorice root which may also have a MAO effects and increase the ptency of the anesthetic
  • Gingko Biloba, a powerful anticoagulant considered to be three times stronger than vitamin E
  • Ginger, Garlic, Cayenne and Bilberry have antiplatelet activity and may inhibit clot formation
  • Ginseng has been associated with episodes of hypertension and tachycardia
  • Echinacea may impact the liver when general anesthetic is used
  • Aloe, used topically can cause dermatitis, and when ingested can create low potassium levels

Your laboratory work should be done 14 days prior to your surgery. You will be given the necessary forms to complete these tests and given a list of laboratories. You will not be required to fast before the pre operative blood work. In some cases some patients may require a cardiogram.

You may also be asked to have medical records sent to our office, if you have any medical conditions that require special consideration by the surgeon or the anaesthetist. All patients are required to be tested for HIV and Hepatitis B & C. All results are CONFIDENTIAL.

Special conditions for smokers apply, avoid smoking for 2 weeks BEFORE and AFTER surgery to improve healing response.

You also mustn't eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your surgery, unless told otherwise by the doctor. This includes water, some people think it's ok. to have water, but if you do your surgery may be canceled. Prescriptions medications will be discussed with the doctor.
