POPULAR NON-SURGICAL PROCEDURES

FOREWARD NON-SURGICAL PROCEDURES

The injectables as they are often referred to are quick wrinkle treatments and are often the first choice by those not wanting surgery. Botox™, Hyaluronic Acid, Artecoll™ collagen and fat injections are popular techniques for treating facial lines and wrinkles. Patients are usually pleased with the results of these minimally invasive procedures. However, injectable wrinkle treatments, cannot correct facial sagging or achieve the same results as a facelift, eyelid surgery, brow lift or skin resurfacing.

Botox™ is most effective in treating the type of lines and wrinkles caused by muscle contraction during facial expressions such as frowning or squinting. Botox™ has been a boon to the Aging Baby Boomers, with more than 1.6 million procedures (ASAPS- statistics) performed last year on roughly 850,000 patients.

Health Canada and the Food and Drug administration have now announced that the drug is now approved for use "to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows." However, the substance has been approved since 1989 to treat a variety of medical conditions involving muscular spasms or twitches, especially a disabling eye disorder called blepharospasm.

Collagen and Hyaluronic Acid are other substances used for treatment of frown lines, "crows feet" and smile lines. It is injected with a tiny needle directly into the wrinkle, crease or depression. Collagen and Hyaluronic Acid plump us the soft issues, filling in lines and depressions by replacing the natural collagen and hyularonic acid that is lost from your skin over time. Only a very small percentage of patients are allergic to collagen, but pre treatment testing is recommended.
Hyaluronic acid and allergy testing is not required.

Fat makes an excellent soft tissue filler material. Since it is taken from your own body, there is no possibility of an allergic reaction. Fat is collected from a donor site, such as your abdomen, buttocks or thighs, using a small needle attached to a syringe. After processing to remove excess fluids, the fat is injected in multiple thin strands into the treatment area. Slight "over filling" is necessary since some of the fat will be absorbed by your body.

Remember that all of the injectables are, to varying degrees, temporary treatments that need to be repeated to maintain results. For permanent results, soft tissue fillers that are surgically implanted under the skin are another option for some patients. Injectable wrinkle treatments are popular because they produce quick results and involve virtually no down time - you can return to work and continue with your social activities immediately.
