EYELID SURGERY (BLEPHAROPLASTY)

Eyelid surgery is performed on men and women of all ages who want to improve their self-image. Most people have eyelid surgery to minimize the effects of aging. However, some people in their 20's or 30's may also benefit from the procedure.

If you have any of the following conditions you may be a good candidate for eyelid surgery:

  • excess skin that hides the natural fold of the upper eyelid
  • loose skin that hangs down from the upper eyelids
  • puffiness in the upper eyelids that creates a tired look
  • excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelids
  • puffy 'bags' and in some cases dark circles

Eyelid surgery can usually correct these problems, though other treatments may also need to be considered. For example, if the upper eyelid condition is accompanied by sagging of the eyebrows, a forehead lift may be recommended. Smoothing of crow's feet may require chemical peeling or laser resurfacing procedures. Circles beneath the eyes caused by dark pigmentation may be treated with a bleaching solution or chemical peel. Dr. Beninger can provide further information if you if you have interest in these procedures.

Aesthetic eyelid surgery is often performed along with a facelift or other facial rejuvenation procedures. Some people have inherited traits that cause them to have eyelid surgery in their early 20's. The result from this surgery is a more alert and rested appearance.

Surgery is not without it risks, and eyelid surgery needs to be approached with extra caution if you have any of the following medical conditions -

  • thyroid problems, such as hypothyroidism or Graves' disease
  • lower eyelids that droop significantly and reveal white beneath the iris (the eye's coloured portion)
  • eye problems such as 'dry eye', a detached retina, or glaucoma
  • high blood pressure or other circulatory disorders
  • cardiovascular disease
  • diabetes

If you suffer from any of these problems be sure to discuss them with the surgeon.

After surgery expect some swelling that may persist for a week or longer. Your vision may be somewhat blurry for a few days, and you will want to wear dark glasses to protect your eyes from wind and sun. Within a week, you can wear makeup to conceal any remaining discolouration. You should be back to work within ten days.

Dr. Beninger has extensive experience in performing these procedures and is happy to answer your questions.

As people age, the eyelid skin stretches, muscles weaken, and fat accumulates around the eyes, causing "bags" above and below.

Before surgery, the surgeon marks the incision sites, following the natural lines and creases of the upper and lower eyelids.

Underlying fat, along with excess skin and muscle, can be removed during the operation.

In a transconjunctional blepharoplasty , a tiny incision is made inside the lower eyelid and fat is removed with fine foreceps. No skin is removed, and the incision is closed with dissolving sutures.

The surgeon closes the incisions with fine sutures, which will leave nearly invisible scars
