THE CHEMICAL PEEL

For people who are hesitant about surgery, the chemical skin peel may be the answer for them.

The skin peel is an application of a chemical solution to sun-damaged, unevenly pigmented, and finely wrinkled facial areas. It works by peeling away the skin's top layers, and has proven to be a very popular nonsurgical procedure. (see non surgical procedures for statistics).

Chemical peels , vary according to their specific ingredients and their strength. The depth of peeling action may also depend on factors such as how long solutions remain on the skin and whether they are lightly applied, or more heavily or vigorously applied.

These peels can be applied by a medical professional or an esthetician under a doctor's supervision. The best chemical is chosen for the patient depending upon their skin type, and what their expectations are. Generally, the most superficial peels are those using alpha hydroxy acids (AHA's) , glycolic acids, lactic or fruit acids. Various concentrations may be applied weekly or at longer intervals to obtain the best result.

The benefits of these peels are that no anesthesia or sedation is needed, and the patient only feels a mild tingling or stinging sensation when the solution is applied. Sometimes a single treatment will be sufficient to give a healthy glow to the skin, and other times several treatments may be required.

You can immediately resume your normal activities, as it is a short safe procedure.

Chemical Peel is especially useful for the fine wrinkles on cheeks, forehead, and around the eyes, and the vertical wrinkles around the mouth.

The chemical solution can be applied to the entire face, or to a specific area - for example, around the mouth - sometimes in conjunction with a facelift.

At the end of the phenol peel, a thick layer of petroleum jelly may be applied to the treated area.

A protective crust may be allowed to form over the new skin. When it's removed, the skin underneath will be a bright pink.

After healing, the skin is lighter in colour, tighter, smoother, and younger looking.
