ABDOMINOPLASTY (TUMMY TUCK)
Sagging skin around the abdomen, caused by muscle weakness, pregnancies or significant weight loss/gain, a tummy tuck is designed to give you a flatter abdomen. It is a major surgical procedure to remove the excess skin and fat from the abdomen, and tightens the muscles of the abdomen wall.
This procedure can dramatically reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen, but it does leave a permanent scar which may extend from hip to hip. The best candidates for this procedure are those men and women who are in relatively good shape, but bothered by a large fat deposit or loose abdominal skin that won't respond to diet or exercise.
Those patients who intend to lose a lot of weight should postpone surgery until they reach their desired weight. Also women who plan future pregnancies should wait, as vertical muscles in the abdomen that are tightened during surgery can separate again during pregnancy. Your surgeon may not recommend abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) if you have scars from previous abdominal surgery, or may caution you that the scars could cause increased risk of healing problem.
A "Tummy Tuck" can enhance your appearance and self confidence, but it won't change your looks. Before you decide on surgery think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with Dr. Beninger.
During the initial consultation Dr. Beninger will evaluate your health and determine the extent of the fat deposits in your abdominal region and assess your skin tone. At this time you will be asked if you smoke, if on any medications, what vitamins minerals you are taking, or other drugs.
Ask lots of questions and be frank, as Dr. Beninger will be frank with you and discuss the alternatives and the risks and the limitations of each. There are several options including liposuction in conjunction with the "tummy tuck". In any case Dr. Beninger will work with you and recommend the procedure that is right for you.
Dr. Beninger meets with all of his patients personally before surgery. During the consultation process he will spend considerable time obtaining your history, and you will have a physical examination. Be sure to discuss your expectations with Dr. Beninger as not all expectations can be accomplished. Photographs of prior surgeries by Dr. Beninger can assist you in this regard.
In preparation for your surgery, information is provided on this site together with what to prepare the day of your procedure. Dr. Beninger performs all of the procedures personally in a private surgical facility, which has state of the art equipment and is certified by the CAAS.
The recovery process depends upon the individual. If you start out in good physical condition with strong abdominal muscles recovery from surgery will be much faster. Some people can return to work in two weeks, others it may take 3 to 4 weeks to recuperate.
Remember, the results will be long lasting if you follow a balanced diet and exercise regularly. If you are realistic in your expectations and having a permanent scar, then "tummy tuck" may be just for you. Dr. Beninger has extensive experience in performing this procedure and is happy to answer your questions.
